The Henderson Family YMCA's Safety Around Water (SAW) initiative partners with second graders from Vance County Schools to instill vital water safety skills. SAW is a national program offered by YMCAs that focuses on teaching children how to navigate water environments safely, regardless of their age or background. Kim Davis, Director of Aquatics at the Henderson Family YMCA, leads the SAW program along with several staff and volunteers, ensuring safety and a positive learning experience for every student. Davis provided insight into one of the aims of this program - “Each year there are drownings but lately the drownings have increased. We live in an area with large lakes and pools. The SAW program teaches safety skills to help the students to be able to help save themselves until help arrives.”
